Using Native American, or Indians, as mascots for sports team is a new modern type of racism and discrimination today. For some reason we as Americans seem blind or immune to this and it has been brought up to much attention, the only reason why I know of this is because my teacher actually put more emphasis on this. A lot of times we find this common, to have an Indian mascot. In Chicago we have an Indian mascot for the BlackHawks (a hockey team). But to be honest it would be offense if there were a mascot representing any other race. Say for example, we had the “Polish men” team or something. This wouldn’t even be thought of as a possibility because it is immediately seen as offensive and if it were to occur, it would be removed immediately and would be a complete shock that someone so cruel would name a sports’ team mascot like this. But why is it that it’s okay for us to do this to Native Americans? Perhaps some of us find it as a sign of respect or homage to Native Americans because they were the first inhabitants of our land, America. But, even with this reason, it is more important to see how they feel about having a caricature of their heritage being displayed to represent a team and used to strike fear into opponents. Personally, I believe that this problem should be fixed immediately because I. myself not even being a Native American, find it disrespectful to any race and humiliating ton human beings as a whole for being so inconsiderate. Screw the “resect” excuse, this is just discrimination in a modern disguise.
